      <abstract><title>Abstract</title>

      <p id="d2e150">Understanding Earth resilience – the capacity of the Earth system to absorb and regenerate from perturbations – is key to assessing risks from anthropogenic pressures and sustaining a safe operating space for humanity within planetary boundaries. Classical resilience indicators are designed for autonomous systems with fixed attractors, but the Earth system is fundamentally non-autonomous and out of equilibrium, calling for new ways of defining and quantifying resilience.</p>

      <p id="d2e153">Here, we introduce a path-resilience approach that assesses how perturbations deviate from and return to a reference trajectory of a conceptual climate model replicating the glacial-interglacial cycles of the Late Pleistocene. We generate two types of perturbation ensembles: a stochastic ensemble and a pulse-perturbation ensemble, and compute two complementary metrics: the Reference Adherence Ratio, <inline-formula><mml:math id="M1" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">RAR</mml:mi><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>, defined as the fraction of stochastic trajectories that remain within a narrow band around the unperturbed trajectory; and return time, defined as the time a single perturbed trajectory takes to return to the reference path. Together, these metrics reveal strong temporal variation in resilience across the glacial-interglacial cycles. We find that <inline-formula><mml:math id="M2" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">RAR</mml:mi><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> increases markedly during deglaciations and peaks in interglacial periods, while return times generally shorten as the system approaches interglacial conditions, indicating that certain phases of the cycles act as convergence zones along the forced trajectory. As the Earth system departs from such interglacial regimes under ongoing anthropogenic forcing, understanding the resilience of these trajectories, and what it may take to return to them, becomes increasingly important.</p>

      <p id="d2e184">These results highlight that resilience in non-autonomous systems is inherently path-dependent and illustrate a promising first step toward its quantification. Further research is needed to develop more general resilience indicators suitable for complex, forced dynamical systems.</p>

  <label>1</label><title>Introduction</title>
      <p id="d2e196">Quantifying Earth system resilience is essential for evaluating the planet's capacity to withstand and regenerate from growing human-induced stresses, such as greenhouse gas emissions and land-use changes <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx37 bib1.bibx3" id="paren.1"/>. As humanity continues to transform the climate system and the biosphere, understanding the processes that strengthen or undermine its stability becomes increasingly important <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx51" id="paren.2"/>. Such knowledge is crucial for developing strategies to regenerate and reinforce Earth system resilience, ultimately helping society return to a safe operating space within planetary boundaries <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx36 bib1.bibx6 bib1.bibx10" id="paren.3"/>.</p>
      <p id="d2e208">The concept of resilience has been explored from multiple disciplinary perspectives, giving rise to diverse definitions. Two predominant forms have traditionally defined the field: engineering resilience <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx22" id="paren.4"/>, which concerns linear stability analysis and the rate of return to equilibrium after small perturbations, and ecological resilience, which addresses the resilience of nonlinear dynamical systems with multiple stable states and their capacity to maintain essential functions while transitioning between different regimes <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx21" id="paren.5"/>. Related terms such as stability, robustness, and persistence are often used interchangeably despite subtle differences, creating definitional diversity that has spread across social and natural sciences <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx27 bib1.bibx2" id="paren.6"/>. To navigate this complexity, the question of <italic>resilience of what to what?</italic> <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx21 bib1.bibx45" id="paren.7"/> has become a guiding framework – clarifying which system components are meant to be sustained, which properties are at risk, and which disturbances are relevant. Here, this question is interpreted as the resilience of the glacial-interglacial ice volume trajectory to perturbations, i.e., the capacity of the ice-climate-carbon system to remain close to its characteristic large-scale path in face of external shocks.</p>
      <p id="d2e226">This framework gains particular relevance when examining Earth's climate history. Palaeoclimate variability during the Cenozoic offers important insights into the Earth system's changing stability and resilience, as there is evidence for alternative attractors <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx46" id="paren.8"/> and resilience loss before major climate shifts and hyperthermal events in that period <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx39" id="paren.9"/>.</p>
      <p id="d2e235">Building on this palaeoclimate context, the glacial-interglacial cycles of the Late Pleistocene offer a compelling test case for studying Earth system resilience, due to their regularity and sensitivity to external forcing <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx33 bib1.bibx28" id="paren.10"/>. These cycles involve transitions between long glacial periods with large continental ice sheets and shorter interglacials with reduced ice volume, paced by variations in Earth's orbital configuration – eccentricity, obliquity, and precession – which act faster than the system's internal adjustment times. The dominance of the <inline-formula><mml:math id="M3" display="inline"><mml:mo>∼</mml:mo></mml:math></inline-formula> 100 000-year cycle in the Late Pleistocene, despite weak direct insolation forcing at that frequency, poses a long-standing puzzle in palaeoclimate dynamics <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx23" id="paren.11"/>, with a variety of proposed solutions <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx47 bib1.bibx1" id="paren.12"><named-content content-type="pre">e.g.,</named-content></xref>. The Earth system can thus be viewed as a non-equilibrium, externally forced system, following a quasi-periodic trajectory shaped by the interplay between astronomical forcing and internal feedbacks.</p>
      <p id="d2e257">Over the past 800 000 years, this glacial-interglacial rhythm has been remarkably persistent <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx28" id="paren.13"/>. However, model studies suggest that anthropogenic greenhouse gases already present in the atmosphere may delay the next glacial inception by over 100 000 years <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx13" id="paren.14"/>, marking a significant departure from the quasi-periodic limit cycle that has dominated recent Earth history. Continued warming raises the risk of a further shift toward ”Hothouse Earth” conditions that last occurred millions of years ago, conditions that modern human societies would likely be unable to adapt to <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx41 bib1.bibx25" id="paren.15"/>. The resilience of Holocene-like interglacial states, which define the safe operating space delineated in the planetary boundary framework <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx38" id="paren.16"/>, must therefore be understood within a non-equilibrium framework, as such interglacial states naturally occur as part of a dynamically evolving glacial-interglacial cycle. Observational evidence already hints at systemic weakening, including reduced carbon sink capacity in land-systems <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx26" id="paren.17"/> particularly in the Amazon <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx5 bib1.bibx14" id="paren.18"/>, and amplified feedbacks in the ocean-atmosphere system and other tipping elements <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx50" id="paren.19"/>. While this study does not address such future scenarios directly, they underscore the need to understand Earth system resilience.</p>
      <p id="d2e282">Classical resilience indicators – such as return time to equilibrium, eigenvalue-based stability measures, or potential well depth – are poorly suited for systems like the glacial-interglacial cycle. These metrics are typically developed for autonomous systems with fixed-point attractors and assess resilience as the rate of return to such a state after perturbation <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx27" id="paren.20"/>. The Earth system, by contrast, is fundamentally non-autonomous, driven by time-dependent forcings such as orbital variations and, more recently, anthropogenic influences. These drivers operate on shorter timescales than the system's intrinsic adjustment times, resulting in transient dynamics that do not converge to equilibrium. Consequently, conventional indicators fail to meaningfully characterise resilience in this context.</p>
      <p id="d2e288">Related approaches have nevertheless been used to study transient stability in glacial-cycle dynamics, including finite-time Lyapunov exponents, potential analysis, and early-warning-signal methods <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx9 bib1.bibx34 bib1.bibx29 bib1.bibx7" id="paren.21"/>. These approaches provide complementary perspectives on transient stability. In this study, we use finite-time Lyapunov exponents as a comparison diagnostic (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F3"/>), while our main focus is on how finite perturbations deviate from and return to a time-dependent reference path under identical forcing.</p>
      <p id="d2e296">Against this background, we adopt a <italic>path resilience</italic> perspective <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx3" id="paren.22"/>. Rather than asking whether the system returns to a stable state, the focus here is on how perturbed trajectories deviate from – and eventually return to – a reference trajectory. In this framing, the path itself becomes the object of resilience analysis, making it more appropriate for externally forced, non-equilibrium systems. Returning to the “<italic>resilience of what to what?</italic>” framework, resilience is defined here as the resilience of the glacial-interglacial ice volume trajectory to perturbations in ice volume, with the “sustainant” being the historical reference trajectory, and the “disturbance” being imposed stochastic variability or pulse-like shocks, representing internal variability and external shocks respectively.</p>
      <p id="d2e308">In this study, we employ a reduced-complexity climate model developed by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx44" id="text.23"/>. The model captures essential large-scale feedbacks among global ice volume, atmospheric <inline-formula><mml:math id="M4" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">CO</mml:mi><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">2</mml:mn></mml:msub></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>, and global mean temperature. Its low dimensionality makes it computationally efficient and particularly suitable for long-term ensemble simulations designed to explore dynamical behaviour under perturbations. Our goal is not to produce detailed predictions, but to develop and demonstrate a transparent methodology for measuring path-wise Earth system resilience that can be extended to more complex models.</p>
      <p id="d2e325">We generate two perturbation ensembles: a stochastic ensemble with low-amplitude continuous noise, following the Hasselmann framework <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx18" id="paren.24"/>, to represent unresolved fast processes; and a pulse-perturbation ensemble, in which the system is shocked once at a selected time point and then allowed to evolve deterministically. We apply two main diagnostics: the Reference Adherence Ratio, <inline-formula><mml:math id="M5" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">RAR</mml:mi><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>, which measures how closely perturbed trajectories follow a reference path over time; and the return time, which quantifies how long it takes trajectories to rejoin and remain near the reference. In addition, we compare these path-resilience metrics with a finite-time Lyapunov exponent diagnostic following <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx34" id="text.25"/>. Together, the two main diagnostics operationalise path resilience in a non-autonomous dynamical systems setting.</p>
      <p id="d2e349">The paper is organised as follows: Sect. <xref ref-type="sec" rid="Ch1.S2"/> describes the model setup and governing equations; Sect. <xref ref-type="sec" rid="Ch1.S3"/> introduces the perturbation ensembles and resilience metrics, and presents the results; Sect. <xref ref-type="sec" rid="Ch1.S4"/> discusses model limitations and their implications; and Sect. <xref ref-type="sec" rid="Ch1.S5"/> summarises the main conclusions and outlines future directions.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="Ch1.S2">
  <label>2</label><title>Model setup</title>
      <p id="d2e368">This section describes the reduced-complexity climate model of <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx44" id="text.26"/> used to simulate glacial-interglacial dynamics on orbital timescales. The model represents the co-evolution of three globally averaged variables: ice volume anomaly <inline-formula><mml:math id="M6" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi>v</mml:mi><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>, atmospheric <inline-formula><mml:math id="M7" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">CO</mml:mi><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">2</mml:mn></mml:msub></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> concentration <inline-formula><mml:math id="M8" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">CO</mml:mi><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">2</mml:mn></mml:msub><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>, and global mean temperature anomaly <inline-formula><mml:math id="M9" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi>T</mml:mi><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>. In our implementation, the model is treated as a differential-algebraic system: <inline-formula><mml:math id="M10" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi>v</mml:mi><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> is the only prognostic variable, advanced by a single first-order integro-differential equation for ice-sheet evolution, while <inline-formula><mml:math id="M11" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">CO</mml:mi><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">2</mml:mn></mml:msub><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> and <inline-formula><mml:math id="M12" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi>T</mml:mi><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> are diagnosed from algebraic closure relations at each time step.</p>
      <p id="d2e476">The model is explicitly non-autonomous, with time-dependent orbital forcing as the sole external driver. Internal feedbacks include the ice-albedo effect, dynamic carbon cycle responses, and a memory term reflecting the persistence of ice sheets over multi-millennial timescales. These mechanisms jointly enable the model to reproduce key features of Quaternary glacial variability, such as the characteristic asymmetric ice volume cycles.</p>
      <p id="d2e479">The model is governed by three coupled equations. The global ice volume evolution is described by:

      <p id="d2e736">This term plays a key role in reproducing the asymmetric shape of the glacial cycles by accelerating ice volume collapse during deglaciations. The memory timescale <inline-formula><mml:math id="M19" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="italic">τ</mml:mi><mml:mo>=</mml:mo><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">30</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> kyr, adopted from <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx44" id="text.27"/>, is consistent with the typical lithospheric adjustment time to ice sheet loading. Ice volume anomaly <inline-formula><mml:math id="M20" display="inline"><mml:mi>v</mml:mi></mml:math></inline-formula> is unitless and normalised to zero at pre-industrial levels and unity at the last glacial maximum.</p>
      <p id="d2e762">Atmospheric <inline-formula><mml:math id="M21" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">CO</mml:mi><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">2</mml:mn></mml:msub></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> concentration (in units of ppm) is determined by:

      <p id="d2e970">Figure <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F1"/> compares the simulated ice-volume anomaly with the palaeo-reconstructed global ice-volume anomaly derived from the sea-level stack of <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx40" id="text.28"/>, along with the imposed orbital forcing and frequency spectra. Using a model calibration as described in Sect. <xref ref-type="sec" rid="Ch1.S2.SS2"/>, the model captures both the amplitude and dominant periodicities of Quaternary glacial cycles reasonably well, making it a solid basis for the perturbation experiments in this study.</p>

These series are already on an insolation-like scale, so we use them without additional scaling or normalisation. The only preprocessing applied is the mean subtraction shown in Eq. (<xref ref-type="disp-formula" rid="Ch1.E5"/>), through the term <inline-formula><mml:math id="M39" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi>f</mml:mi><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo><mml:mo>-</mml:mo><mml:mover accent="true"><mml:mi>f</mml:mi><mml:mo mathvariant="normal">‾</mml:mo></mml:mover></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>. The mean orbital forcing <inline-formula><mml:math id="M40" display="inline"><mml:mover accent="true"><mml:mi>f</mml:mi><mml:mo mathvariant="normal">‾</mml:mo></mml:mover></mml:math></inline-formula> entering the ice volume equation is computed over the full 2000 kyr forcing time series, i.e. the <inline-formula><mml:math id="M41" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mo>[</mml:mo><mml:mo>-</mml:mo><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">1000</mml:mn><mml:mo>,</mml:mo><mml:mo>+</mml:mo><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">1000</mml:mn><mml:mo>]</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> kyr window.</p>
<sec id="Ch1.S2.SS1">
  <label>2.1</label><title>Model constraints and limitations</title>
      <p id="d2e1259">Like all reduced-complexity models, this model employs simplifying assumptions and explicit constraints. These choices are detailed in the original study by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx44" id="text.32"/>, but we briefly highlight two constraints that are important for this work.</p>
      <p id="d2e1265">The most important constraint for our resilience analysis is that global ice volume is constrained not to fall below its pre-industrial level (<inline-formula><mml:math id="M42" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi>v</mml:mi><mml:mo>≥</mml:mo><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">0</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>), reflecting the present-day as the zero anomaly baseline. This approach leads to interglacials being represented by extended periods of zero ice-volume anomaly, which does not fully capture the gradual transitions seen in palaeoclimate data. This artificial boundary may create an illusion of enhanced stability during interglacial periods, as perturbed trajectories cannot deviate below this constraint.</p>
      <p id="d2e1280">The model also imposes a constraint to simulate the mid-Brunhes transition, a shift around 400 kyr BP after which interglacials became notably stronger. This change is not well explained by orbital forcing alone and is likely linked to external factors not captured by the model. To approximate this behaviour, ice volume is not allowed to fall below <inline-formula><mml:math id="M43" display="inline"><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">0.05</mml:mn></mml:math></inline-formula> before 400 kyr BP. This, however, introduces a sharp drop from <inline-formula><mml:math id="M44" display="inline"><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">0.05</mml:mn></mml:math></inline-formula> to <inline-formula><mml:math id="M45" display="inline"><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">0</mml:mn></mml:math></inline-formula> at the time of the transition, which does not realistically reflect the gradual nature of the transition.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="Ch1.S2.SS2">
  <label>2.2</label><title>Numerical implementation</title>
      <p id="d2e1312"><xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx44" id="text.33"/> originally implemented the model in <sc>Matlab</sc>. We re-implemented it in Python and integrated it using a forward Euler scheme with a time step of <inline-formula><mml:math id="M46" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">Δ</mml:mi><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>=</mml:mo><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">1</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> kyr, consistent with the original study. At each time step, we first diagnose <inline-formula><mml:math id="M47" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi>T</mml:mi><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> from the previous-step ice volume and atmospheric <inline-formula><mml:math id="M48" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">CO</mml:mi><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">2</mml:mn></mml:msub></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>, then diagnose <inline-formula><mml:math id="M49" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">CO</mml:mi><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">2</mml:mn></mml:msub><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> from <inline-formula><mml:math id="M50" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi>T</mml:mi><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>, the previous-step ice volume, and a backward-difference estimate of <inline-formula><mml:math id="M51" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">d</mml:mi><mml:mi>v</mml:mi><mml:mo>/</mml:mo><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">d</mml:mi><mml:mi>t</mml:mi></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>, and finally advance <inline-formula><mml:math id="M52" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi>v</mml:mi><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> by one time step using the ice-volume equation. The memory term <inline-formula><mml:math id="M53" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mi>M</mml:mi><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">v</mml:mi></mml:msub><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> is calculated using a trapezoidal approximation of the integral over the past 30 kyr. This numerical setup provides sufficient accuracy to reproduce key features of glacial-interglacial cycles while remaining computationally efficient for ensemble experiments. To reduce the influence of initial transients before comparison with palaeo data, each simulation is extended by 200 kyr prior to the start of the observational window.</p>
      <p id="d2e1438">To calibrate the model's nine tuneable parameters, we employed a Metropolis-Hastings Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) approach. We follow the original calibration strategy and optimise the model ice volume output by comparing it against reconstructed ice volume anomalies from the <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx40" id="text.34"/> sea-level stack spanning the past 800 kyr, and obtain a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.892 with the reconstruction. Notably, the parameters <inline-formula><mml:math id="M54" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mi>c</mml:mi><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">2</mml:mn></mml:msub></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> and <inline-formula><mml:math id="M55" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mi>c</mml:mi><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">3</mml:mn></mml:msub></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>, which govern the sensitivity of <inline-formula><mml:math id="M56" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">CO</mml:mi><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">2</mml:mn></mml:msub></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> to ice volume and its rate of change (Eq. <xref ref-type="disp-formula" rid="Ch1.E3"/>), differ substantially from the original values. This may reflect structural differences in implementation or sensitivity in the calibration process. Further details on the MCMC setup and likelihood function are provided in Appendix <xref ref-type="sec" rid="App1.Ch1.S1"/>.</p>

</sec>
<sec id="Ch1.S3">
  <label>3</label><title>Perturbation experiments and indicators of path resilience</title>
<sec id="Ch1.S3.SS1">
  <label>3.1</label><title>Experiment I: Stochastic ensemble and Reference Adherence Ratio (RAR)</title>
      <p id="d2e1498">To investigate the resilience of the glacial-interglacial trajectory under persistent, small-scale disturbances (e.g. representing internal variability), we extend the model with a stochastic noise component and analyse its effect on an ensemble of simulations. Specifically, we generate 1000 ice volume trajectories subject to continuous Gaussian perturbations with standard deviation <inline-formula><mml:math id="M57" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="italic">σ</mml:mi><mml:mo>=</mml:mo><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">0.001</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>. This ensemble allows us to assess how closely the system remains aligned with its unperturbed reference path over time. To quantify this behaviour, we introduce the <italic>Reference Adherence Ratio</italic>, <inline-formula><mml:math id="M58" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">RAR</mml:mi><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>, a non-autonomous resilience indicator that measures the fraction of ensemble members staying within a tolerance band of <inline-formula><mml:math id="M59" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mi mathvariant="italic">α</mml:mi><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">RAR</mml:mi></mml:msub><mml:mo>=</mml:mo><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">0.001</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> around the reference trajectory. In the following, we first describe the stochastic extension to the model, then introduce <inline-formula><mml:math id="M60" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">RAR</mml:mi><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>, compare it with a finite-time Lyapunov exponent diagnostic, and present the results.</p>

  <label>3.1.1</label><title>Stochastic extension to the model</title>
      <p id="d2e1566">We extend the model with a stochastic component following Hasselmann's approach to stochastic climate modelling <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx18" id="paren.35"/>, where unresolved processes are modelled as noise.       <p id="d2e1686">We apply this stochastic differential equation framework to the ice-volume equation, which is the only differential equation in our model. Millennial-scale oscillatory variability in the polar cryosphere is well documented, including Dansgaard-Oeschger events <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx8" id="paren.36"/> and Heinrich events <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx20" id="paren.37"/>, which may be driven by internal ice sheet mechanisms, shifts in ocean heat transport, and changes in atmospheric circulation or solar variability <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx4 bib1.bibx15" id="paren.38"/>.</p>

This enables us to run model ensembles with different noise realisations and investigate alternative ice volume trajectories and their statistics.</p>
      <p id="d2e1935">The amplitude of stochastic forcing, <inline-formula><mml:math id="M75" display="inline"><mml:mi mathvariant="italic">σ</mml:mi></mml:math></inline-formula>, is a key parameter controlling the strength of internal variability represented in the model. To find an appropriate value, we first consider the standard deviation of residuals between modelled and observed ice volume trajectories (<inline-formula><mml:math id="M76" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="italic">σ</mml:mi><mml:mo>≈</mml:mo><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">0.1</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>) as a physically motivated starting point. However, values of this order suppress the characteristic 100 kyr spectral peak, see Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F2"/>. Figure <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F2"/> therefore compares four representative choices spanning weak to very strong noise. At the lowest level, <inline-formula><mml:math id="M77" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="italic">σ</mml:mi><mml:mo>=</mml:mo><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">0.0001</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>, the trajectories remain comparatively tightly clustered around the reference. At <inline-formula><mml:math id="M78" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="italic">σ</mml:mi><mml:mo>=</mml:mo><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">0.01</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>, the ensemble spread increases substantially and the characteristic 100 kyr peak disappears from the spectrum. At <inline-formula><mml:math id="M79" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="italic">σ</mml:mi><mml:mo>=</mml:mo><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">0.1</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>, which is close to the residual-based estimate, the trajectories become so dispersed that the glacial-interglacial structure is largely obscured. The intermediate choice, <inline-formula><mml:math id="M80" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="italic">σ</mml:mi><mml:mo>=</mml:mo><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">0.001</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>, provides a useful compromise: it preserves the key spectral features of the glacial-interglacial cycle while still allowing substantial stochastic deviations, particularly during glacial periods. We therefore use <inline-formula><mml:math id="M81" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="italic">σ</mml:mi><mml:mo>=</mml:mo><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">0.001</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> for the subsequent resilience analyses.</p>

  <label>3.1.2</label><title>Reference Adherence Ratio (RAR)</title>
      <p id="d2e2098">To quantify how strongly the simulated ensemble trajectories cluster around the simulated reference path, we introduce the Reference Adherence Ratio, <inline-formula><mml:math id="M85" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">RAR</mml:mi><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>. This time-dependent metric measures the fraction of ensemble members that remain within a tolerance band of width <inline-formula><mml:math id="M86" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mi mathvariant="italic">α</mml:mi><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">RAR</mml:mi></mml:msub></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> around the deterministic reference trajectory at each time step:

Conversely, a low <inline-formula><mml:math id="M93" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">RAR</mml:mi><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> indicates greater divergence from the reference path and is interpreted as lower resilience.</p>
      <p id="d2e2276">We compute <inline-formula><mml:math id="M94" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">RAR</mml:mi><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> on an ensemble of 1000 stochastic trajectories using <inline-formula><mml:math id="M95" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mi mathvariant="italic">α</mml:mi><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">RAR</mml:mi></mml:msub><mml:mo>=</mml:mo><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">0.001</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>, chosen to match the amplitude of the stochastic forcing while remaining sensitive to meaningful deviations.</p>
      <p id="d2e2308">Figure <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F3"/>b shows the resulting <inline-formula><mml:math id="M96" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">RAR</mml:mi><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> time series for three representative tolerance values, alongside the unperturbed reference trajectory and stochastic ensemble shown in Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F3"/>a. For the main choice <inline-formula><mml:math id="M97" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mi mathvariant="italic">α</mml:mi><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">RAR</mml:mi></mml:msub><mml:mo>=</mml:mo><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">0.001</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>, <inline-formula><mml:math id="M98" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">RAR</mml:mi><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> varies substantially over time, typically falling to low values during glacial periods and rising sharply at deglaciations and into interglacials.</p>

      <p id="d2e2475">The higher curves obtained for larger <inline-formula><mml:math id="M104" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mi mathvariant="italic">α</mml:mi><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">RAR</mml:mi></mml:msub></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> show the expected increase in absolute adherence when the tolerance band is widened, but the overall timing of peaks and troughs remains similar across all three values. This indicates that the qualitative temporal pattern is not tied to a single threshold choice.</p>
      <p id="d2e2489">The elevated <inline-formula><mml:math id="M105" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">RAR</mml:mi><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> during interglacials suggests a higher capacity to absorb perturbations. However, this may be partly an artefact of the model's hard constraint that ice volume cannot drop below its pre-industrial value (<inline-formula><mml:math id="M106" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi>v</mml:mi><mml:mo>≥</mml:mo><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">0</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>). When active, this lower bound prevents downward excursions and can artificially boost <inline-formula><mml:math id="M107" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">RAR</mml:mi><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> by limiting the spread of perturbed trajectories. More indicative of path resilience in our sense are the increases in <inline-formula><mml:math id="M108" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">RAR</mml:mi><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> that occur during the deglaciation phases – periods of rapid ice loss – when the constraint is not yet active and the system is free to evolve. Here the convergence of ensemble members toward the reference trajectory indicates an attracting segment of the forced trajectory, rather than stability of a fixed climate state.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="Ch1.S3.SS1.SSS3">
  <label>3.1.3</label><title>Finite-time Lyapunov exponent</title>
      <p id="d2e2555">Following <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx34" id="text.41"/>, we also use a finite-time Lyapunov exponent (FTLE) as a comparison diagnostic for local transient divergence or convergence along the same simulated reference trajectory (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F3"/>). For the deterministic reference trajectory <inline-formula><mml:math id="M109" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi>v</mml:mi><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> and the <inline-formula><mml:math id="M110" display="inline"><mml:mi>k</mml:mi></mml:math></inline-formula>th stochastic realisation <inline-formula><mml:math id="M111" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mover accent="true"><mml:mi>v</mml:mi><mml:mo stretchy="false" mathvariant="normal">̃</mml:mo></mml:mover><mml:mi>k</mml:mi></mml:msub><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>, we define the FTLE over a time window of length <inline-formula><mml:math id="M112" display="inline"><mml:mi mathvariant="italic">τ</mml:mi></mml:math></inline-formula> starting at time <inline-formula><mml:math id="M113" display="inline"><mml:mi>t</mml:mi></mml:math></inline-formula> as

Positive values indicate local divergence over the chosen window, while negative values indicate local convergence. We use <inline-formula><mml:math id="M116" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="italic">τ</mml:mi><mml:mo>=</mml:mo><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">10</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> kyr (not the memory timescale <inline-formula><mml:math id="M117" display="inline"><mml:mi mathvariant="italic">τ</mml:mi></mml:math></inline-formula> appearing in the ice-volume equation in Sect. <xref ref-type="sec" rid="Ch1.S2"/>), because this window is comparable to the timescale of a typical deglaciation and therefore probes transition-scale instability rather than whole-cycle variability.</p>
      <p id="d2e2766">Panel (c) of Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F3"/> shows the FTLE time series for the same stochastic realisations as in panel (a). The FTLE shows short-horizon intervals of local divergence and convergence that broadly align with the phases identified by <inline-formula><mml:math id="M118" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">RAR</mml:mi><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>: deglaciations and interglacials tend to coincide with contraction toward the reference path, while divergence episodes occur more often in glacial phases and shortly after transitions. However, FTLE addresses a different question from <inline-formula><mml:math id="M119" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">RAR</mml:mi><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>. It is a local linear diagnostic based on the growth of small separations over a fixed window, whereas <inline-formula><mml:math id="M120" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">RAR</mml:mi><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> measures the fraction of finite perturbations that remain within a prescribed tolerance <inline-formula><mml:math id="M121" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mi mathvariant="italic">α</mml:mi><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">RAR</mml:mi></mml:msub></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> of the reference path under identical forcing.</p>
      <p id="d2e2824">We therefore retain <inline-formula><mml:math id="M122" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">RAR</mml:mi><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> as the primary path-resilience representation and use FTLE as a complementary comparison with earlier transient-stability studies.</p>
</sec>
</sec>
<sec id="Ch1.S3.SS2">
  <label>3.2</label><title>Experiment II: Pulse-perturbation ensemble and return time</title>
      <p id="d2e2850">To complement the stochastic ensemble, we also assess the system's resilience to isolated, abrupt perturbations using a pulse-perturbation ensemble. This setup probes the system's ability to recover from discrete shocks applied at specific times along the reference trajectory, rather than from continuous background variability.</p>
      <p id="d2e2853">At each time step within the simulation window <inline-formula><mml:math id="M123" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>∈</mml:mo><mml:mo>[</mml:mo><mml:mo>-</mml:mo><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">800</mml:mn><mml:mo>,</mml:mo><mml:mo>-</mml:mo><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">1</mml:mn><mml:mo>]</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> kyr, we generate an ensemble of 20 trajectories by applying a one-time perturbation to the ice volume variable, with an amplitude drawn uniformly from the interval <inline-formula><mml:math id="M124" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mo>[</mml:mo><mml:mo>-</mml:mo><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">0.01</mml:mn><mml:mo>,</mml:mo><mml:mo>+</mml:mo><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">0.01</mml:mn><mml:mo>]</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>, resulting in a total of 16 000 perturbed trajectories. The system then evolves deterministically from that point onward. This perturbation amplitude is an order of magnitude larger than the stochastic noise used in the previous experiment (<inline-formula><mml:math id="M125" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="italic">σ</mml:mi><mml:mo>=</mml:mo><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">0.001</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>), and is meant to represent more shock-like disturbances.</p>

  <label>3.2.1</label><title>Return time</title>

      <p id="d2e3176">Return time provides a temporal measure of path resilience, indicating how quickly the system recovers from an isolated shock. Short return times suggest high resilience; long return times indicate prolonged deviation. Conceptually, this aligns with classical engineering resilience metrics <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx27" id="paren.42"/> but is applied here to recovery toward a reference <italic>trajectory</italic>, not a fixed point.</p>
      <p id="d2e3185">Our return criterion is deliberately strict: unlike exponential decay-based definitions (e.g., <inline-formula><mml:math id="M140" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">1</mml:mn><mml:mo>/</mml:mo><mml:mi>e</mml:mi></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> recovery), it requires sustained convergence. This avoids falsely classifying temporary re-approaches as recovery – particularly important in a non-autonomous system where external forcing may later drive re-divergence.</p>
      <p id="d2e3200">We compute return times using <inline-formula><mml:math id="M141" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mi mathvariant="italic">α</mml:mi><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">RT</mml:mi></mml:msub><mml:mo>=</mml:mo><mml:msup><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">10</mml:mn><mml:mrow><mml:mo>-</mml:mo><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">6</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:msup></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>, chosen to ensure persistent re-alignment of perturbed and reference trajectories. Figure <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F4"/> presents the results: Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F4"/>a shows 16 000 perturbed trajectories (black) alongside the unperturbed reference trajectory, while Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F4"/>b displays the distribution of return times for perturbations applied at each time step.       <p id="d2e3269">Return times vary substantially over the glacial-interglacial cycle, generally decreasing as the system approaches interglacial conditions. In particular, MIS11 and the Holocene stand out as strong convergence zones, with many long excursions returning to the reference path. This suggests higher resilience during these periods. One likely explanation is their unusual length: both MIS11 and the Holocene are exceptionally long interglacials due to orbital forcing, providing extended windows for perturbed trajectories to realign <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx4" id="paren.43"/>.</p>
      <p id="d2e3275">Sensitivity tests using larger perturbation amplitudes and more ensemble members (up to 100 per time step) increased the spread of return times but did not change the overall temporal pattern. Likewise, moderately relaxing <inline-formula><mml:math id="M143" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mi mathvariant="italic">α</mml:mi><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">RT</mml:mi></mml:msub></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> shifts absolute return times but preserves the key structure of the results. This confirms that our findings are robust to these parameter choices.</p>

<sec id="Ch1.S4">
  <label>4</label><title>Discussion</title>
      <p id="d2e3299">In this study, we introduced a perturbation-based approach to exploring Earth System resilience, aiming to move beyond traditional attractor-based concepts. By analysing how perturbed trajectories deviate from and return to a reference path, we quantified the system's time-varying resilience over the last 800 kyr of glacial-interglacial dynamics. Our results reveal a strongly state-dependent pattern: during some periods, perturbed trajectories remain tightly clustered around the reference, while during others they diverge widely.</p>
      <p id="d2e3302">Our stochastic ensemble results align with previous findings by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx34" id="text.44"/>, who showed that the timing of stochastic forcing in conceptual climate models can influence the duration and nature of transient excursions. We build on this by explicitly quantifying such detours using resilience metrics, specifically the Reference Adherence Ratio, <inline-formula><mml:math id="M144" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">RAR</mml:mi><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>, and return time, and by showing that sensitivity to perturbations depends systematically on the system's position along the glacial cycle. The FTLE comparison in Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F3"/> is broadly consistent with this picture, but it remains a local windowed diagnostic of small-separation growth rather than a direct measure of finite-perturbation recovery.</p>
      <p id="d2e3324">In particular, MIS11 and the Holocene stand out as strong convergence points where many trajectories recover. Their unusual length and stability, a feature also emphasised in model-based studies of glacial pacing dynamics <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx12" id="paren.45"/>, may explain this exceptional behaviour. More generally, interglacial periods consistently show lower variance in the ensemble, with perturbed trajectories tending to cluster more tightly around the reference path compared to glacial periods, which aligns with palaeoclimate evidence showing that natural temperature variability was lower during interglacial conditions <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx35" id="paren.46"/>. Taken together, these findings suggest that path resilience varies systematically across the glacial-interglacial cycle and is often elevated during interglacials and key transition periods, although some of this interglacial signal may reflect structural features of the model. We address these limitations in more detail below.</p>
<sec id="Ch1.S4.SS1">
  <label>4.1</label><title>Model limitations</title>
      <p id="d2e3340">Several limitations of the model should be kept in mind when interpreting the results. Most importantly, the apparent resilience during interglacials may partly be an artefact of a hard lower bound imposed on ice volume (<inline-formula><mml:math id="M145" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi>v</mml:mi><mml:mo>≥</mml:mo><mml:mn mathvariant="normal">0</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>), which prevents trajectories from falling below pre-industrial levels. This constraint leads to extended periods of zero ice volume and artificially suppresses variability during interglacials, potentially inflating both <inline-formula><mml:math id="M146" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">RAR</mml:mi><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> and the apparent tendency toward shorter return times. Future work should compare results across models without such constraints to assess the extent of this effect.</p>
      <p id="d2e3369">A further limitation lies in the model's non-Markovian structure. It includes a memory term that integrates ice volume over the past 30 kyr, making it effectively infinite-dimensional and preventing the use of standard Jacobian-based stability analysis. This justifies our simulation-based approach, but also limits direct comparisons with studies that rely on linearised stability frameworks.</p>
      <p id="d2e3372">The present indicators should also be interpreted as simple illustrative diagnostics rather than universal resilience measures. Their role here is to demonstrate a path-resilience perspective in a controlled conceptual model, not to provide directly transferable tools for arbitrary systems or datasets. Relatedly, the tolerances <inline-formula><mml:math id="M147" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mi mathvariant="italic">α</mml:mi><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">RAR</mml:mi></mml:msub></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> (for <inline-formula><mml:math id="M148" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">RAR</mml:mi><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>) and <inline-formula><mml:math id="M149" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mi mathvariant="italic">α</mml:mi><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">RT</mml:mi></mml:msub></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> (for return time) should be viewed as proof-of-concept, model-specific choices. Future work could instead scale such thresholds relative to quantities such as the range, variance, or other characteristic amplitudes of the time series under study.</p>
      <p id="d2e3411">Another limitation is that our analysis assumes a single deterministic reference trajectory for a fixed parameter set. In systems with multiple coexisting deterministic trajectories, stronger initial-condition dependence, or chaotic but partially synchronised responses to forcing, the definition of a single reference path becomes less straightforward. In such cases one could define the reference trajectory conditionally on a chosen initial condition, or use an unperturbed ensemble mean or median together with an ensemble-based spread measure.</p>
      <p id="d2e3415">Finally, the model lacks self-sustained oscillations, which have been proposed as key ingredients in explaining the 100 000-year glacial pacing problem <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx12" id="paren.47"/>. Our results therefore reflect the resilience of a purely forced system and may change in models that include internally driven oscillations. A natural next step is to validate the findings with a more complex model, but given the need for large ensembles, there are computational challenges. It may be possible using Earth system models of intermediate complexity like CLIMBER-X, which can simulate 10,000 simulation years per day on a node with 16 CPUs <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx48 bib1.bibx49" id="paren.48"/>. If run on a more powerful cluster, one could generate a single 1 million year simulation in around 20 d, but it becomes clear that large ensembles are limited. Fully integrated Earth system models would require computational resources that make comparable ensemble experiments currently impractical.</p>
      <p id="d2e3424">Despite these limitations, our approach connects to a broader shift in how resilience is conceptualised and operationalised in non-autonomous systems, as discussed next.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="Ch1.S4.SS2">
  <label>4.2</label><title>Relationship to existing research</title>
      <p id="d2e3436">Classical resilience indicators are designed for autonomous systems near equilibrium, where concepts like basins of attraction and return time to fixed points are well-defined. Several studies have highlighted the lack of tools for analysing resilience in forced, transient systems <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx27" id="paren.49"/>. Our approach addresses this gap by using ensemble perturbations to evaluate system stability over time, offering a first step toward quantifying resilience in non-autonomous systems.</p>
      <p id="d2e3442">We see this work as a practical example of path resilience thinking, applied to palaeoclimate dynamics. The concept of path resilience <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx3" id="paren.50"/> shifts the focus from return to equilibrium states to return to a reference trajectory – making it more appropriate for externally forced systems like the glacial-interglacial cycle.</p>
      <p id="d2e3448">This perspective complements, rather than replaces, several existing approaches. In studies of conceptual glacial-cycle models, finite-time Lyapunov exponents have been used to identify intervals of transient divergence and local instability of nearby trajectories <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx9 bib1.bibx34" id="paren.51"/>. Potential analysis has been used to infer changes in effective climate states and basin structure from palaeoclimate time series <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx29" id="paren.52"/>, while early-warning-signal methods have sought signs of critical slowing down before abrupt climate transitions <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx7" id="paren.53"/>. Our FTLE comparison in Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F3"/> follows this line of work and confirms that short-horizon local divergence and convergence vary strongly along the glacial cycle. There, FTLE (<inline-formula><mml:math id="M150" display="inline"><mml:mi mathvariant="italic">λ</mml:mi></mml:math></inline-formula>) and <inline-formula><mml:math id="M151" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">RAR</mml:mi><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> align in phase: convergent <inline-formula><mml:math id="M152" display="inline"><mml:mi mathvariant="italic">λ</mml:mi></mml:math></inline-formula> often precedes rising <inline-formula><mml:math id="M153" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">RAR</mml:mi><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula>, divergent <inline-formula><mml:math id="M154" display="inline"><mml:mi mathvariant="italic">λ</mml:mi></mml:math></inline-formula> when spreads widen – expected, since both follow the same path but FTLE uses local separation growth over the 10 kyr window while <inline-formula><mml:math id="M155" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">RAR</mml:mi><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>t</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math></inline-formula> is the within-tolerance fraction.</p>
      <p id="d2e3526">Related work by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx32" id="text.54"/> uses time-varying Jacobians and eigenvectors to assess sensitivity in ecological communities. While powerful, their method assumes differentiable, Markovian dynamics. In contrast, our model includes a memory term – an integral over past ice volume – which makes standard Jacobian-based methods inapplicable. This motivates our use of a model-agnostic, simulation-based strategy that can handle non-Markovian dynamics.</p>
      <p id="d2e3533">Our approach builds on Hasselmann's programme for stochastic climate modelling <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx18" id="paren.55"/>, where unresolved processes are treated as noise. This perspective laid the foundation for analysing climate variability through probabilistic ensemble dynamics and has recently been extended by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx30" id="text.56"/> and others through operator-theoretic methods. In particular, transfer operator theory provides a systematic framework for describing the evolution of probability distributions in phase space and has been used to study mixing, regime transitions, and responses in high-dimensional systems. These methods offer conceptual and computational tools that could support more general resilience indicators – especially in systems with complex dynamics and non-equilibrium behaviour.</p>
      <p id="d2e3542">However, while transfer operator methods are well developed for autonomous, Markovian systems, they are not yet fully applicable to systems with memory (non-Markovian dynamics), and a general theoretical framework for analysing stability and resilience in non-autonomous systems – such as those driven by orbital forcing – remains underdeveloped <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx11 bib1.bibx30" id="paren.57"/>.</p>
</sec>
</sec>
<sec id="Ch1.S5" sec-type="conclusions">
  <label>5</label><title>Conclusion</title>
      <p id="d2e3558">As humanity continues to push the Earth system toward new and potentially unstable modes of operation, understanding the resilience of both past and projected trajectories becomes increasingly critical. The approach developed here represents a step toward that goal by enabling resilience analysis in externally forced, non-autonomous systems that do not settle into traditional equilibrium states.</p>
      <p id="d2e3561">We introduced a simulation-based method to assess path-based Earth system resilience across glacial-interglacial cycles. By applying perturbations to a reduced-complexity climate model and analysing trajectory responses, we show that resilience varies markedly over time and depends on the system's state at the moment of disturbance.</p>
      <p id="d2e3564">Our findings reveal that resilience fluctuates throughout the glacial-interglacial cycle, reflecting the evolving dynamical landscape of the system. Interglacial periods – particularly MIS11 and the Holocene – consistently draw perturbed trajectories back toward the reference path, suggesting enhanced recovery capacity linked to their unusual duration. Deglaciation phases show similar behaviour, with trajectories reconverging even before interglacial conditions are reached. The Reference Adherence Ratio and return time provide useful, albeit preliminary and deliberately simple, indicators of resilience in non-autonomous systems, while the finite-time Lyapunov exponent offers a complementary comparison diagnostic for local transient divergence.</p>
      <p id="d2e3567">These results mark an initial proof of concept for quantifying resilience in settings where traditional equilibrium-based tools fall short. The path-resilience framework shifts focus from fixed-point attractors to the stability of entire trajectories – an essential perspective for assessing the resilience of transient climate states as the Earth system moves into uncharted territory under anthropogenic forcing <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx42" id="paren.58"/>.</p>
      <p id="d2e3574">Several limitations must be acknowledged. The model's hard lower bound on ice volume may inflate apparent resilience during interglacials, and its non-Markovian structure prevents standard stability analysis. Moreover, the model lacks self-sustained oscillations that could influence glacial pacing. Despite these simplifications, the study demonstrates the potential of trajectory-based resilience assessment in externally forced systems.</p>
      <p id="d2e3577">Future work should test and extend this framework across other conceptual and intermediate-complexity models such as CLIMBER-X <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx48 bib1.bibx49" id="paren.59"/> and LOVECLIM <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx16" id="paren.60"/>. Developing more advanced resilience indicators for non-autonomous dynamics remains a key priority – promising directions include transfer operator theory, pullback attractors, and random dynamical systems.</p>
      <p id="d2e3586">This line of research aligns with Hasselmann's view of the climate as a stochastically forced dynamical system. Recent work by Lucarini and colleagues <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx30" id="paren.61"/> has begun to formalise this perspective, paving the way for robust, operator-based resilience metrics. Advancing these ideas could deepen our understanding of Earth system resilience and support the development of general tools for resilience assessment.</p>

      <p id="d2e3603">To recalibrate the model described by <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx44" id="text.62"/>, a Metropolis-Hastings Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx19" id="paren.63"/> was implemented, targeting agreement between simulated and reconstructed ice volume anomalies over the past 800 kyr based on the sea-level stack from <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib1.bibx40" id="text.64"/>. The recalibration achieved a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.892.</p>
